Debts discharged for singer Toni Braxton

Posted on August 31st, 2011 No Comments

Singer Toni Braxton, who filed her second bankruptcy filing last October, recently had several of her debts discharged.  The singer filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which allows for certain dischargeable debts to be cleared.

In her bankruptcy filing, Braxton listed $1.6 million in assets and $18.3 million in debts.  The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles issued an order which states that most of Braxton’s debts that were eligible to be discharged were discharged.

Commonly discharged debts in Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases include business debts, personal loans, leases, and credit card debts.  Creditors of these debts are prevented from taking action against people who filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and are relieved of their debts.

ACORN files for Chapter 7 bankruptcy

Posted on November 8th, 2010 No Comments

ACORN, or the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last Tuesday after the costs of lawsuits and investigations related to the 2008 presidential election scandal became too much for the organization.  In 2008, accusations of voter fraud by the nonprofit spread through the right-wing media.  Since then, ACORN has lost congressional funding and incurred several publicity battles.

“We have seen this coming for some time.  Our [more than 1200] chapters closed in the first quarter of the year.  We have spent our remaining resources trying to dissolve the organization with integrity, while continuing to respond to extremist attacks,” stated ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis.  In reference to the allegations of voter fraud, Lewis said that “the ongoing political onslaught caused irreparable harm”.

Toni Braxton files for Chapter 7

Posted on October 13th, 2010 No Comments

Six-time Grammy award winning singer Toni Braxton, 43, recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection for the second time.  Chapter 7 bankruptcy essentially frees an individual from their debts and allows them to liquidate their assets to pay off creditors.

Braxton filed for Chapter 7 for the first time in 1998 and she later had an almost $400,000 tax lien filed against her by the IRS.  The filing lists Braxton’s assets between $1 and $10 million and liabilities from $10 to $50 million.  Creditors include Neiman Marcus, Tiffany’s Co., AT&T, American Express, Four Seasons Hotels, Westin Hotels and several others.

Officials involved in the case cited Braxton having to cancel a series of shows due to the diagnosis of angina and other medical concerns as reasons for her going bankrupt.
