Ronald M. Gipson

Ronald M. Gipson, 65, of Galveston, passed away at his home on Monday, August 4, 2008, following a two-year battle with kidney cancer.

Ron, a partner in the law firm Gipson & Norman, was born in Neely, Mississippi, and moved to Galveston, Texas at a young age. A 1961 Ball High School graduate, Ron graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut in 1965, where he was co-captain of the football team under Coach Otto Graham and received a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering. After several years of service, Ron returned to Texas, where he received his J.D. degree, with honors, from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law in 1971. At UT Law, Ron was a member of Chancellors (top 1% academically), the Order of the Coif, and the Texas Law Review. After Ron graduated UT Law, he chose to return to Galveston and began practicing law in 1972. Ron was an avid fisherman, basketball player, and birding enthusiast.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian (Breland) Gipson and James Odell Gipson.

He is survived by his wife Roxanna K. Gipson; children Carrie, Jamie, and Angie Gipson and their mother, Georgie H. Sage; sister Wanda Howard and husband, Bobby; brothers Doyce Richardson and wife, Beverly, and Sam Gipson and wife, Leda; and his beloved nieces and nephews.

Ron was a special son of Galveston who sailed the seas, centered the football, and displayed a sense of humor as broad as his smile. He will be greatly missed by all.

Ron practiced exclusively in the area of bankruptcy law since 1988 and was at the time of his death Board Certified in Consumer Bankruptcy Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He served as a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustee for 14 years and represented both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 debtors in the Galveston and Houston area. Ron was personally involved with several thousand bankruptcy cases, either as Trustee or as a debtor’s attorney over this period.
